Thank you Nachum,
Last night’s snow wiped out an entire slate of games, putting a bit of a damper on what was supposed to be a report dedicated to clarifying the JVand varsity basketball playoff picture. But, thankfully, so there’s so much to talk about for this coming week that it really wont even matter, so let’s dive right in. Good morning and welcome to the Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update.  I’m Elliot Weiselberg and here’s what’s happening around the Yeshiva League.
JV and Varsity hockey have an interesting week ahead of them as all 4 divisions will come down to two nights to determine their champions. Wednesday night, the Eastern conference will be on full display as HAFTR and DRS square off to determine or help determine which team in their division is top dog. In varsity, HAFTR and DRS are vying for the top two seeds. A DRS regulation win will give the Wildcats the crown for the 4th straight season. Anything else, and HAFTR will take the top seed for the first time since 2009. In JV, HAFTR has already been relegated to the third seed as a result of their 4-2 loss to Rambam Saturday night, but they can play spoiler by defeating DRS who needs a win to tie themselves with Rambam to force a coin flip for the top seed. A similar scenario plays itself out in the Western Conference on Thursday night as TABC and Frisch will do battle to determine the top two seeds in both JV and Varsity.
As varsity goes, a TABC regulation win will tie the two, while anything else hands the division to Frisch. In JV, it’s the other way around. As far as the playoffs go, in JV, TABC, Frisch, SAR, Kushner, DRS, Rambam, HAFTR and Flatbush have clinched the 8 spots. In varsity, DRS, HAFTR, Flatbush, Rambam, HANC, TABC, Frisch, Ramaz, Kushner and MTA have earned 10 of the 11 berths. MTA gained entry by virtue of their 5-2 victory over SAR last week. There is only one spot left open, it is in the East, and it will either go to Magen David or North Shore.
Over in basketball, the story of the week happened in JV Basketball, where the two top divisional teams out west, SAR and Frisch did battle on Saturday night. Frisch jumped out early to a 24-12 lead at the end of one, and took charge opening up a 26 point lead mid-way through the third, from there, though, the NYC division champion Sting, mounted a furious comeback, taking 30 of the next 34 points to tie the game at 61 with 2 minutes to go. A Mayer Scharlat 3-pointer kick-started Frisch’s game and the Cougars were able to hold SAR down, forcing turnovers on consecutive possessions, leading to a 69-61 Frisch victory, taking what very well could have been a preview of the Western Conference Finals.
Finally, in Varsity basketball, Heschel earned a 56-47 victory over Kushner to keep their bye hopes alive. Kushner, rebounded, pulling out the 52-39 victory over Hillel, clinching Kushner’s first playoff berth in 8 years. Finally, Frisch defeated MTA 54-36 to keep them one game behind TABC and SAR and their First-Round Hosting Hopes alive.
As far as playoff participants go in varsity basketball, North Shore, HAFTR, Flatbush, YDE, Ramaz, Heschel, Frisch, TABC, SAR and Kushner have clinched playoff berths. The final two spots will be from the East and will go to two of the three of Magen David, DRS and HANC. Magen David and DRS will make up a game from last night where the winner will gain automatic entry into the postseason.
